I have been teaching the students in a junior middle school in the country for about thirteen years. In my teaching, I’ve found that many students fall behind others quickly in Grade Seven or Grade Eight. It’s very bad for their further study. It’s a big disadvantage for them to go to high school . I hope I can reveal the reasons and find the possible solutions to this problem. So that I can improve my English teaching, help my students and improve my ability of studying English teaching.
Presentation
With internationalization of our country, English teaching has become more and more important. All the middle school students learn English, even primary school students, about ten years old, or even younger, begin to learn English. They are very lucky to have the chance to learn English from the best age for language learning.
Primary school and Grade Seven is the beginning of learning English at school, so it’s one of the most important periods. For many teachers, they are proud of their top students, but they ignore those students who just won’t learn or can not learn when they teach. Some of them are very weak in English .They can’t read, say or write, or understand what others say in English.
I have made a survey about how poor the falling students in learning English .I ask the students from Grade Seven, Eight, Nine .Ten questions about their English level and study.
Questionnaire:
Can you read and write 26 English letters correctly?
Can you spell new words with the help of sound symbols?
Can you read passages or dialogues in your textbook?
How many words you have learnt in the textbook can you recite?(in percent)
Can you tell or write a short story in English?
Can you understand the teachers in English class?
Can you use the everyday English in your book?
Do you read other English books besides your textbook?
What’s the usual mark in English tests?
What do you think of your English learning?
According to the Students’ answer sheet, we find the difference between excellent students and falling students are very big. The falling students can’t say or write beautiful English after three years’ English learning. They can’t read the letters, sound symbols or spell common words. Their test mark is usually below thirty.
English, as a key to know the world well, is very interesting and very useful. Why do so many students fall behind others? How can we do to help these falling students in learning English? This is a big problem that English teacher must face and I should try to help those falling students find a key to catch up with others and learn English better.
Analysis.
The education policy of our nation is to provide good and complete education for all the students. So the falling students problem has become a really serious problem. My preliminary research confirmed that there are many reasons accounted for the Students’ falling behind others in English learning. I have investigated 60 students from Grade Seven in our school and get them to answer the reasons why they fall behind others. They can be shown in the following form.

Obviously, from the table above, they can be described specifically as follows:
First, learning English words and grammar points is a tiring job. Many students prefer to do maths or science exercises rather than recite English words ,grammar items, dialogues or passages. According related research, English is maybe the hardest subject for middle school students. It needs to be practiced again and again. It’s a little boring .So they are not interested in repeating, reading and learning English.
Second, they have not enough confidence to learn English well. In their view, English is too difficult to learn it well .They are not willing to drop it, but they have to. Many students say: It took me the most time, but it’s still the poorest. And also what they learn in class, such as the ways of using the words, grammar rules, doesn’t seem to appear on test papers. They are afraid of English tests.
Third, English class is the concentrated learning time for the middle school students. They are told to take many notes in class and have to deal with heavy homework or assignments after class. Their teachers don’t ask them questions, don’t ask them to practice or act. What they can do is to sit quietly, watch carefully and write all the time .It isn’t interesting at all. So many students feel sleepy in class.
Fourth, they can not get immediate help when meeting difficulties in learning English. In class, teachers don’t care whether they have understood or not. After class ,they have no chance to get help from the excellent students, either. At home their parents are often too busy to know about it. So they feel hopeless and frustrated.
Objective& Hypothesis
My research objective is to build the students’ confidence in learning English, enhance their interest and help the students to learn in many ways.
It is hypothesized that most falling students can catch up with others, if they are encouraged, treated the same important as others and given enough care and help.
Solutions.
Because of the reasons mentioned above, I’m sure there are certainly some possible solutions. So I have discussed with many English teachers and middle school students. After discussion and investigation, I think we must pay attention to the following advice.
1, Find out the falling students early
Pay more attention to the whole teaching and learning process in class and get evidences of the pupils level and abilities. The earlier you find the possible falling students, the more easily they can keep pace with others. Most falling students show the signs of study obstruction very early. If the students are not given enough care, it will be more difficult for you to change the condition.
For instance, a student can’t read the letters A, B, C….how can he or she spell a word? How can he or she spell the new words if a student can’t read the sound symbols? How can he or she say or read, or write sentences if a students can’t read or spell a word?
So it’s very important for the teachers to find out the falling students’ difficulties early. It’s also a necessary step for the teachers to design the teaching plan.
2. Confront the students privately to analyze the problem and identify causes.
Different falling students drop because of different reasons and they often face different problems. Some of them dislike learning English. Some of them are afraid of learning English. Some have very poor background. In this case, if you don’t find the exact causes, you can’t help the students to solve the problem and get them to walk out of the trouble.
So first, you, as a teacher, should find a right chance to talk with them about the problem and the causes. You must be patient enough to let them be willing to tell you his or her troubles and accept your advice.
3. Help the students make a plan of action with learning goals
Many falling students fall from the very early start. They are poor in English in many ways. A proper goal is the key to succeed in learning English. English study is a process in which you can’t make them improve English one or two days, the only way you can take is to improve it step by step, day after day. Therefore, the teacher should offer some learning styles to make progress and develop the students’ steps to reach his goals.
4. Make the English class more attractive
As we all know, interest is the best teacher. In order to get falling students to have much interest in English learning, we need not only know what to teach, but the falling students, in a sense, it’s the most important and essential. There are four aspects that we can do to attain this goal.
First of all, make yourself a good actor . To watch and act. So if you perform or display how people use a language, the student will understand the vocabulary, patterns, the grammar more easily and they will be more interested in your class. Your colorful gestures and different tone of voice may attract their attention.
Secondly, be sure to use real items if necessary. For example, when I taught the contents about food and drink. I brought all kinds of food and drinks to my class. All the students were in high spirit. And the falling students can remember the new words quickly. But if you explain the words, phrases and grammar again and again, the result will be quite different, they may get bored and eventually lose their interest.
In addition, to be humorous, and friendly to every student, and you will be popular with the falling students. Your humorous tone, your kindness will attract falling students. They love you, and your class, too. They also like learning English.
At last, give the falling students a chance to shine in class. Usually, the falling students can’t speak well, or ask the teachers’ questions. But as a teacher, you can’t let it go. You must let them have the chance to show their abilities, their cleverness. For example, you can ask them simple questions with an answer “Yes” or “No”. You can get them to do something for you in class. You can let them be “Jim”, “Lucy”, or “Lily”. You can give them less and easier homework, try your best to make them enjoy the pleasure of learning English.
5. Keep an eye on the students’ learning after class.
The teacher should often ask about the students’ learning after class, follow up the students’ learning goals and listen to his learning ideas. If they make even a little progress, you should give them a praise and show your further hope. If they don’t do well in English test, you can’t give them a scolding. Help them to find out the causes and make them know you are supporting them. And make more efforts to give them enough help in time.
The teacher should link the students’ parents to supervise them at home. Make sure that falling students keep study time and get some help from his parents.
6. Establish study group between the falling students and others.
In this way they will have more opportunities to study in partnership for accomplishing the plan. They will help each other in class or after class. And also it’s good for them to communicate with each other in English. It will make them feel learning English easier and more interesting and make them get help immediately. They can also have more English activities. They will learn English happily through these activities.
7. Congratulate the students on success in time
The teachers should do their best to find the progress the students make and share successes with the falling students and make them say: “I can learn English better, I want to learn English now.” The falling students will build up strong confidence in learning English.
Unsolved
I think improving the falling students isn’t an easy problem. It still need further study.
First, the English test now is too difficult for them. There is no special test according to their level. It hurts their confidence badly. And also the English textbook is not suitable, too.
Second, many students can not be taken good care of. They’re too young to control themselves. They stay at home alone without parents’ good care.
Third, they have to study other subjects. So it needs the help from other teachers.
The present study presents the falling students’ problems. After careful analysis, four causes of the problem are shown in the report. According to these reasons and teaching practice, I present some possible solutions. But there is still a lot of work for us to do to help the falling students .If we solve this problem completely, English teaching in our country will be improved quickly. English is a bridge to other countries, to the sea of knowledge and to the information around the world. Every English teacher in Chinamust try our best to help every student learn it better.
