When a light passenger plane flew off course some time ago, it crashed in the mountains and its pilot was killed. The only passenger, a young woman and her baby twin daughters, were unhurt. It was the middle of winter. Snow lay thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away. When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find. During the night, it got terribly cold. The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case herself, but it was too small. Early next morning, she heard planes passing overhead and wondered how she could send a signal. Then she had an idea. She stamped out the letters “SOS” in the snow. Man's first real invention, and one of the most important inventions in history, was the wheel. All transportation and every machine in the world depend on it.
The wheel is the simplest yet perhaps the most remarkable of all inventions, We know there are no wheels in nature -- no living thing was ever created with wheels. How, then, did man come to invent the wheel?
Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the carcass of a heavy animal through the forest on logs(原木) more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.
It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker a long time to imagine two thin slices of log connected at their centers by a strong stick. This would roll along just as the logs did, yet be much lighter and easier to handle. Thus the wheel and axle came into being, and with them the first carts.

4 How Can a small Stamp Be Worth $ 16,800?
Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on a two-penny stamp has made it worth a million and a half times its face value.
Do you think it impossible? Well, it is true. And this is how it happened.
The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the former British colony ofMauritius, a small island in theIndian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent toLondon.Mauritiuswas about to become the fourth country in the world to put out stamps.
Before the order was filled and the stamps arrived fromEngland, a big dance was planned by the Commander-in-chief of all the armed forces on the island. The dance would be held in his house and letters of invitation would be sent to all the important people inMauritius. Stamps were badly needed to post the letters. Therefore, an islander, who was a good printer, was told to copy the pattern of the stamps. He carefully put the words “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid”, two words seen on stamps at that time, on the several hundred that he printed.
Today, there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left – fourteen One-penny Reds and twelve Two-penny Blues. Because there are so few Two-penny Blues and because of their age, collectors have paid as much as $ 16,800 for one of them.
