By presentation, teachers use those pre-selected vocabulary just mentioned above, and focus on the approaches to present vocabulary in class. In this essay I want to introduce three methods, which I think will help teachers present new words more effectively.
A.Using word games
Word games that challenging students and helping students discover new words is a great and fun tool for teacher to expand students’ vocabulary. Examples include crossword puzzles, anagrams, word jumble, Scrabble, and Boggle.
Take crossword for example, teachers ask students to find their partner, and then give different papers with different information about new words, so there will be information gaps. And by exchanging information students can learn new words, but during the process teachers ask students do not see each others’ information, or it will lose the meaning of peer teaching new words.
B.Using situation or context
Vocabulary cannot be learned isolated, and researchers have found it is more easy for students to learn when they are in the context. In addition, students can easily remember them and store them for long time.
For instance, the teacher tells students she wants to present a word related to money. Firstly, she shows a picture of a very beautiful house to students. Secondly, she just uses the real situation to present these new words.
Teacher:Do you want to own the house?
Teacher:If I do not have enough money, what can I do?
Students:(different answers are given)
Teacher:Do I need to sign document with bank as insurance?
Teacher:So the action is called mortgage.
Thirdly, the teacher just recalls the new words several time, and tries to encourage students to spell the word instead of writing it directly.Fourthly, the teacher asks students to repeat the pronunciation,by CCQ (concept checking questions) to make sure students know the exact meaning of the word.
Can I use the money borrowed from bank to buy a car? (No)
Can I use the money borrowed from bank to buy a house?(Yes)
Can I use the money borrowed from bank to start a business?(No)
Do I need to sign document with government?(Yes)
If students can answer correctly, they will know the word.
